Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint Jean Paul Pillot 2023
Burgundy, France, 75cl
Clos Saint-Jean has a little more breadth and authority than Paul Pillot’s village Chassagne, but the domaine’s trademark precision remains firmly intact. The 2023 opens with ripe lemon, white peach and pear, gradually revealing orange blossom, toasted hazelnut and a faint smoky, flinty character. There is impressive concentration on the palate, with a creamy density through the middle offset by vivid acidity and a firm mineral backbone. Citrus oil and stone fruit give way to chalk, subtle spice and a touch of salinity, creating a finish that feels expansive and persistent rather than simply rich. Powerful in its own quiet way, but beautifully controlled.
Clos Saint-Jean is one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s historic Premier Cru vineyards, situated above the village on the slope towards Saint-Aubin. While historically celebrated for red wine, its Chardonnay can deliver impressive depth and structure. Thierry Pillot’s restrained approach is particularly effective here, allowing the natural weight of the site to come through without excessive oak or ripeness. In 2023, that combination of vineyard character and precision produces a serious white Burgundy with both immediate complexity and the structure to develop beautifully in bottle.
