Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveaux Taupenot-Merme 2022

Perfumed and wonderfully poised, Combe d’Orveaux shows the graceful side of Chambolle but with considerably more depth beneath the surface. The 2022 opens with wild raspberry, black cherry and pomegranate, followed by violet, peony and a subtle thread of sweet spice. The palate is finely layered, with the vintage’s ripe fruit held in check by fresh acidity and beautifully shaped tannins. As it opens, notes of crushed stone, woodland and gentle spice emerge, adding a savoury counterpoint to the fruit. There is both delicacy and quiet intensity here, building towards a long, mineral finish where red berries and floral perfume gradually fade into spice.

Combe d’Orveaux is one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most fascinating Premier Crus, tucked into the combe at the southern end of the appellation and lying immediately alongside the Grand Cru Musigny and close to Échezeaux. Domaine Taupenot-Merme farms organically and has built a reputation for elegant, terroir-focused Burgundy with restrained extraction and sensitive use of oak. The generous 2022 vintage gives this cuvée impressive concentration, while the cooler character of the site preserves the tension and perfume that make Combe d’Orveaux so distinctive. A serious, cellar-worthy Chambolle with considerable finesse.
