Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi Domaine Tawse 2022 | Magnum Burgundy, France, 150cl
Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi Domaine Tawse 2022 | Magnum
Burgundy, France, 150cl
The warmth of the 2022 vintage gives this Clos du Roi plenty of ripe fruit, but there is a savoury, mineral backbone underneath that keeps it distinctly Burgundian. Black cherry, raspberry and ripe red plum are joined by violet, dried herbs and a touch of sweet spice. The palate has impressive depth, with succulent fruit meeting fine, structured tannins and fresh acidity. As it opens, darker notes of liquorice, earth and subtle oak spice emerge, adding complexity without masking the fruit. The finish is long and composed, moving from ripe berries towards minerals, spice and a gently savoury grip.
Clos du Roi is one of Beaune’s well-regarded Premier Cru sites, situated towards the northern end of the appellation where Pinot Noir can combine generosity with considerable structure. Domaine Tawse, established by Canadian businessman Moray Tawse and led by winemaker Pascal Marchand, follows an organic and biodynamic approach with an emphasis on expressing individual vineyard character. In the ripe 2022 vintage, the result is a Beaune of both substance and energy – approachable for its generous fruit today, but with enough tannin and freshness to develop further in bottle.
