The generosity of 2022 suits Meursault beautifully here, giving the wine breadth and texture without sacrificing the freshness that defines Domaine Matrot’s style. Ripe pear, yellow apple and white peach lead the nose, followed by lemon oil, almond and a gentle hazelnut note. The palate is broad and quietly powerful, with layers of orchard fruit and citrus wrapped in a fine, creamy texture rather than overt oakiness. As it develops, more savoury notes of crushed stone, fresh butter and toasted nuts emerge, while a firm line of acidity keeps everything composed. The finish is long and mineral, with citrus peel and saline freshness providing a precise counterpoint to the wine’s natural richness.

Domaine Matrot has been based in Meursault for generations and is today run by sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot. The domaine has long favoured an understated approach to Chardonnay, using careful élevage and restrained oak to allow vineyard character to remain at the forefront. In the warm and successful 2022 vintage, that philosophy results in a village Meursault with impressive concentration but none of the heaviness sometimes associated with the appellation. Already expressive, it has the balance and structure to gain further nutty and savoury complexity with bottle age.
