Jordan Black Magic Merlot 2023

Dark-fruited, polished and impressively layered, Black Magic shows the more serious side of Merlot from Stellenbosch. Ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry form the core, surrounded by notes of dark chocolate, cedar, tobacco leaf and warming spice. The palate is broad and velvety, with generous fruit supported by supple, finely textured tannins rather than excessive weight. Hints of mocha, liquorice and savoury herbs emerge as it opens, while fresh acidity provides welcome definition. The finish is long and composed, leaving dark fruit, cocoa and subtle oak spice lingering behind.

Jordan Wine Estate sits in the Stellenbosch Kloof, where its vineyards benefit from varied slopes, cooling maritime influence and an impressive diversity of soils. Black Magic takes advantage of Merlot's natural affinity with the estate, producing a wine that combines South African fruit generosity with a more classical sense of structure. Rich enough for slow-cooked beef, lamb or steak, yet sufficiently balanced and nuanced to reward drinking on its own, this is a compelling expression of Stellenbosch Merlot.
