Fletcher Langhe Nebbiolo Trepunti 2022

Pale garnet with brick-red highlights, the wine opens with aromas of wild strawberry, sour cherry, and rose petal, layered with hints of dried herbs, spice, and subtle tar. The palate is taut and elegant, with red berry fruit carried on a framework of fine, chalky tannins. Lively acidity lends lift, while savoury notes of tobacco, earth, and mineral spice add depth. The finish is long, dry, and precise, showing both Nebbiolo’s delicacy and its quietly insistent power.

Dave Fletcher, an Australian winemaker based in Barbaresco, has earned a reputation for producing authentic Nebbiolo that respects Piedmont’s traditions while bringing his own perspective. Trepunti comes from a single vineyard parcel near Alba, where sandy and calcareous soils give wines of perfume and finesse. The 2022 vintage, marked by balance and clarity, reflects Fletcher’s philosophy of gentle handling and minimal intervention, yielding a Nebbiolo of purity, transparency, and unmistakable varietal character.

This wine is from three distinct vineyards planted by me using old vines that I identified over the years as the best mother vine matterial for massale selection.

Starderi (Palazzina) 44°44'35"N 8°06'37"E

This vineyard sits in a little ampitheatre with aspects ranging from South East to South west. It is planted with both vertical and horizontal row orientations. This was a personal decision to experiment with the benefits of each row orientation and its influence on light interception by the plant. It effects the sytems of the plant in a way that influences the final complexities in the bottle. It is managed 95% by hand to reduce the impact of tractor work in the vineyard. All sprays, grass cutting and trimming of the vine, done by hand. No soil work is done here.

Montestefano (Per Fiorin) 44°43'30"N 8°05'16"E

This vineyard is divided into two blocks which are separated by a small oak forest which is quite unique for the area and something kept for the biodiversity, despite the cost of the agricutural land there. It is a full south aspect and right at the top of the hill which makes it quite a warm site, like the rest of Montestefano. To combat too much sun, this vineyard has close planted rows which promote shading on the bunch zones and a more humid environment. The vine density is 25% more than a normal vineyard in the region and requires all work to be done by hand as tractors will not fit.

Roncaglie (Ronc-Bas) 44°42'27"N 8°03'44"E

This vineyard location was selected for the potential resiliance against the future of climate change. It is planted on a gentle slope at a lower position on the hill, which gives it less heat exposure and more access to healthy soils with better water holding capacity. It has a higher fruiting wire to protect from frost and a reduced canopy structure to reduce light interception and slow ripening.
