Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Tawse 2022

Dark, expansive and profoundly structured, this is Grand Cru Burgundy with real authority. The 2022 opens with black cherry, wild raspberry and damson, but the fruit is quickly joined by violet, liquorice, forest floor and a darker seam of clove and savoury spice. There is formidable concentration on the palate, yet the wine never feels cumbersome; densely packed fruit is carried by fine, muscular tannins and a mineral freshness that gives the whole wine remarkable definition. With air, layers of earth, iron, dark chocolate and exotic spice begin to unfold. The finish is exceptionally persistent, moving slowly from ripe fruit into stone, spice and savoury complexity. Powerful in youth, but with the balance and architecture for a long evolution in bottle.

Mazis-Chambertin sits at the northern end of Gevrey-Chambertin's extraordinary run of Grand Crus, immediately alongside Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The vineyard is renowned for producing Pinot Noir of depth and muscularity, often combining Gevrey's darker personality with impressive aromatic complexity. Domaine Tawse, led by Pascal Marchand, farms biodynamically and approaches its Grand Cru parcels with restrained extraction and sensitive élevage. The generous 2022 vintage brings remarkable fruit concentration, while the terroir supplies the structure and mineral backbone needed to keep that richness in check. A serious, cellar-worthy Burgundy that should reveal considerably more with patience.
