Monthelie Domaine Matrot 2022

There is a lovely combination of ripe 2022 fruit and old-fashioned Burgundian savouriness here. Red cherry, raspberry and cranberry lead the nose, with violet and rosehip giving way to dried herbs, woodland and a touch of peppery spice. The palate is bright and finely shaped rather than broad, its juicy red fruit held by fresh acidity and gently grippy tannins. With air, the wine becomes more earthy and complex, revealing notes of sour cherry, crushed stone and subtle spice. The finish is energetic and appetising, with the fruit gradually giving way to a savoury, mineral edge.

Monthélie sits between Volnay and Meursault, and its reds can offer much of the perfume and finesse associated with its more famous neighbour while retaining a slightly firmer, rustic character of their own. Meursault-based Domaine Matrot brings its characteristically restrained approach to Pinot Noir, favouring freshness and vineyard expression over extraction or heavy oak. The generous 2022 vintage adds an attractive ripeness to the fruit, making this approachable relatively young while retaining the structure and freshness to develop further.
