Croft Vintage Port 1975

Now fully mature, this is a fascinating glimpse into half a century of bottle ageing. The youthful power of Vintage Port has softened into a complex, mellow bouquet of sultana, dried fig and preserved cherry, followed by cocoa, coffee, toffee and warming ginger spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied and silky rather than imposing, with sweet dried fruit giving way to anise, caramel and a gently bittersweet edge. The tannins have largely melted away, leaving an elegant, harmonious Port whose appeal lies in mature complexity rather than sheer concentration. Recent retrospective tastings place it firmly at its peak, making this a bottle to enjoy rather than hold indefinitely.

1975 was the first generally declared Port vintage following Portugal's 1974 revolution and also the first to be bottled entirely in Portugal. The vintage produced relatively elegant, earlier-maturing Ports rather than the monumental structure of the greatest years, and Croft has developed particularly gracefully. As with any Vintage Port of this age, individual bottle condition and provenance are crucial. It should be carefully decanted to separate the substantial natural sediment that develops during decades in bottle and is best enjoyed over an evening with mature blue cheese, walnuts or simply on its own.
