Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2012 | Magnum

Beautifully mature and wonderfully expressive, Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2012 offers an inviting introduction to the elegance and complexity of mature Bordeaux. Aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and dark cherry are complemented by cedar, tobacco leaf and a gentle suggestion of graphite. With time in the glass, more savoury notes of leather, forest floor and dried herbs begin to emerge, adding depth to the remaining fruit. The palate is supple and harmonious, with fine, well-integrated tannins and a freshness that keeps everything beautifully balanced. Subtle notes of cocoa, sweet spice and earthy minerality carry through to a lingering finish, making this an appealing wine for those who appreciate Bordeaux with a little bottle age.

Produced by Château Smith Haut Lafitte, one of the leading estates of Pessac-Léognan in the Graves region of Bordeaux, Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is the estate's second wine, crafted with the same attention to detail as its celebrated Grand Vin. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it reflects the distinctive gravelly terroir that gives the appellation's reds their combination of aromatic complexity, structure and finesse. The 2012 vintage is particularly attractive for drinking now, having had ample time to soften its youthful tannins and develop the savoury characteristics that make mature Bordeaux so rewarding. A natural partner for roast lamb, beef Wellington, venison or slow-cooked dishes, it offers a chance to enjoy the pedigree of a renowned Bordeaux estate in a more approachable style.
