Mâcon-Igé Les Vernayes Bret Brothers 2022

There is a lovely generosity to the 2022 Les Vernayes, but beneath the ripe fruit sits the energy and mineral definition that makes Bret Brothers so compelling. The nose moves through white peach, ripe pear and lemon into more nuanced notes of acacia, fresh almond and a faint smoky character. The palate has plenty of texture, with fleshy orchard fruit and citrus oil giving breadth through the middle before bright acidity pulls everything firmly back into focus. As it opens, chalk, hazelnut and a subtle saline note emerge, carrying the wine towards a long, composed finish. Ripe and immediately appealing, yet with considerably more detail than its simple Mâcon classification might suggest.

Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret established Bret Brothers to work with carefully selected parcels beyond their family Domaine de la Soufrandise in Pouilly-Vinzelles. Their approach is meticulous and low intervention, with organic or biodynamically farmed fruit, indigenous fermentations and élevage designed to reveal individual vineyard character rather than impose a house style. Les Vernayes comes from Igé in the northern Mâconnais, and the warm 2022 vintage gives this Chardonnay an extra degree of flesh while retaining the freshness and precision that have made the brothers such important figures in the region.
