There is a wonderful Tuscan warmth to this Vino Nobile, but underneath the ripe fruit lies the freshness and savoury detail that make Sangiovese so compelling. The nose brings together black cherry, ripe plum and redcurrant with violet, dried Mediterranean herbs and a dusting of sweet spice. Across the palate it becomes more earthy and complex, with tobacco, cedar and a touch of balsamic character emerging around firm yet finely polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps everything moving, leading to a persistent finish of sour cherry, herbs and gentle spice.
Avignonesi is one of Montepulciano’s leading estates and farms its vineyards organically and biodynamically. Produced from Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, its Vino Nobile combines the variety’s natural elegance with the depth and structure associated with this historic Tuscan appellation. This is a distinctly gastronomic Italian red: serious enough to develop further in bottle, but already beautifully suited to bistecca, slow-cooked beef, wild boar or mature Pecorino.
