Two Paddocks Pinot Noir is the flagship from Two Paddocks. It’s an organically grown barrel selection from the family’s properties. In 2015 this wine was produced from all four of the Neill’s Central Otago vineyards. As in the vineyard, the wine is hand crafted using traditional methods including a 25% whole bunch indigenous fermentation and hand plunging.  Maturation is in French barriques for 11 months, using a mix of older and new (25%) barrels. Two Paddocks Pinot Noir has lifted red fruit, violet and spicy blackcurrant aromatics.  Followed by a suave, textural palate showing lots of density, complexity and persistence.

A cool spring in October and into November was followed by warm dry weather over December and a particularly hot and dry January.  Flowering was finished by the end of December.  Vigour was low and the vines were only green thinned and shoulders removed in the same pass.  Wide open bunches meant very little disease pressure was experienced and we started harvest on the 1st April 2015.

It’s fair to say that Pinot Noir is THE grape of Central Otago although the region is also renowned for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The extreme climate rewards careful site selection with wines of great intensity and finesse, and encourages an increased focus on sub-regional expression. Two Paddocks is a small family wine producing business that is entirely dedicated to making great wine. Actor Sam Neill started the venture in 1993 with his family and hasn’t looked back. His wines, which include three sub-regional Pinot Noirs from Gibbston, Bannockburn,  have been highly awarded around the world and have garnered something of a cult status among wine lovers around the planet.
