Leeuwin Estate releases wines under the Art Series, Prelude Vineyards and Siblings labels. The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent and age-worthy wines and are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian Artists. 2018 was something of a dream vintage in Margaret River. Flowering was good and consistent, summer was warm but not excessively hot and the vines stayed healthy and clean, allowing the harvest to begin a fortnight earlier than it had done in 2017. This release of Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2018 was 100% barrel-fermented (Bordeaux coopers for a finer grain), bringing texture rather than oak influence to the blend, resulting in a wine of immense power and precision. In the mouth it expresses the vintage’s natural richness, but it also feels like a coiled spring, bursting with life but with so much more to come, given time. The balance is impressive, with a real zing and drive and the layers of fruit have depth and significance. Great potential here and yet another superb vintage for this wine. Drink from 2024

“13.5% alcohol. Gingin clone planted in 1975 and 1977 on iron-rich gravelly soils with a clay subsoil. Fermented and matured in new French oak. This is concentrated, mealy and spicy with fresh acidity underpinning powerful, rich, spicy citrus fruit complemented by well integrated oak. There’s some pineapple and peach exoticism here, and overall it’s a big wine with lots of flavour impact, immense fruit concentration, and piercing acidity keeping everything in check. This will age beautifully, I suspect.” – 96 Pts, Jamie Goode, TheWineAnorak.com (Tasted May 2022)
