David & Nadia Hoë Steen Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2019
Swartland, South Africa, 75cl
A 2HA single vineyard planted in 1968 west of Malmesbury on iron-rich clay soils. Recently they have discovered that there is a patch of limestone underneath the site too – unique in the Swartland. Creamy stylish citrus fruit with notes of dried apricot, yellow fruit, dried herbs - lovely tension with beautiful fruit, technically the lowest acidity of the three single vineyard Chenins and finishes fruity and supple - “it’s why we love this wine.” Old Vine Project seal.
"Greenish pale copper colour. Very noble and this definitely benefits from air. I would decant it if serving it before 2023. Really rather beautifully structured with great nobility. Slightly more restrained and stand-offish than the Skaliekop but with a real peacock's tail of flavour on the end. Lots of high tones and satin texture with a very firm spine of acidity. A sort of amalgam of linden/lime flavours and the most luxurious honey – though no obvious sweetness. Very very long. Extremely discreet oak and wonderfully pure acidity." - 17.5 Pts, Jancis Robinson MW, Jancisrobinson.com
