Our first shop was established in 1960 at London House on Lower Street, Pulborough by Charles Hennings. The shop became a popular delicatessen in the area and its offering of wines and spirits grew steadily as demand increased until a few years later when the wines took control of the shop’s shelves!
Charles’s son, Ted, joins the firm to help out delivering during a busy period. He enjoys it so much he decides to stay.
1971, 1976 and 1983
As the wholesale and agency business grows, the demand for new shops does too. New shops open to swell the ranks in Billingshurst (1971-1995), Petworth (1976-present) and Midhurst (1983-1988).
The first unit is acquired at Station Approach with three additional units purchased over the next decade to bring the total warehousing space to over 17,000ft2.
Ted’s son, Matthew, joins the company following extensive wine experience and training gained in France and Australia. He becomes MD in 2005.
All three generations, Charles, Ted and Matthew work side-by-side in the business. The wholesale business continues to grow.
The business offices, previously based above the shop in Lower Street, move to the warehouses on Station Approach. All wholesaling is now done under one roof with an unbroken chain of communication from order to fulfilment.
Our website, henningswine.co.uk, launches. We’re one of the first independent merchants with their own dedicated website.
Following more than a 25 year hiatus a new shop opens in Goring to spread the Hennings message and quickly establishes itself with the population of West and East Sussex.
Just like London buses, following the success of our new Goring shop we open another new premises in the historic market town of Chichester. This is the most modern of our now four shops with state-of-the-art Enomatic wine dispensing machines and a dedicated tasting room for private events on the first floor.
henningswine.co.uk relaunches on a brand new fully responsive platform with a more contemporary look and feel.
