Rioja is the home of bright, berry-scented, barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha grape varieties. Arguably Spain’s top wine region, and one that is world recognised. It is certainly the most famous, rivalled only by Jerez. Located in northern Spain, Rioja’s vineyards trace the course of the Ebro River for roughly 60 miles between the towns of Haro and Alfaro.

The Rioja wine region is contained mostly within the La Rioja region after which it is named, although its northernmost vineyards creep over into neighbouring Navarra and Pais Vasco.

Navarra, northern Spain, is one of the country’s 17 regions and one of the most important wine-producing zones in the entire Iberian Peninsula. It lies immediately north of Rioja and due east of the Basque Country. Most of the vineyards here are situated on the rolling lower slopes of the Pyrenees mountains, which separate Spain from France.
