Wonderful black fruit character with hints of cassis and plums. The palate is full of dark fruits too, but is surprisingly silky. It has good structure and the finish is long and ripe. The 14.5 ha Domaine Henri Gouges has excellent holdings in Nuits-Saint-Georges and produces some of the village’s most highly regarded wines. The average age of the vines is an impressive 50 years with some at 90 years old.
As well as being assistant winemaker at Domaine Remoriquet and a future star of the Burgundy winemaking scene, young Maxime is also the grandson of Volnay’s Pierre Boillot and nephew of the current head of that Domaine. Maxime, however has his own ideas and has been producing excellent wines of his own, using fruit purchased through family and friends in the trade. The Volnay Sur les Roches comes from 60 year old vines situated near the border with Pommard and is a lovely example of a village Volnay.
The beautiful rose gold colour of our Blanc de Noirs comes from the gentle whole bunch pressing of Pinot Noir grapes. Coupled with extended ageing on-lees (44 months+) this is a rich, complex and full sparkling wine with mature autolytic (butter, biscuit, brioche etc.) character and hints of red fruit.
