Bright garnet in colour with a nose redolent of juicy ripe red cherries, violets, earthy complexity and just a hint of licorice and spicy notes of clove and star anise. On the palate, more cherry fruit, with some savoury undertones and firm, velvety tannins. Juicy fruit balances perfectly with crunchy acid, firm tannins and a long, mouthwatering aftertaste. This wine is bright and delicious.
“Even warmer than the year prior, 2015 was a new warmest vintage on record, but surprisingly one with characteristics that, counter to the relatively high temperatures, provided qualities for depth, richness, complexity and balance rarely seen in any vintage. Those characteristics included an early start, a generous crop (carrying more fruit slowed down sugar development and acid depletion). The 2015 Astra is drawn from six barrels in the northeastern blocks at Luminous Hills, and from equal parts of the 667 and 115 clones. The predominantly morning sun influence of these blocks deliver more ethereal nuanced qualities, with dark tone underpinnings, spice and structure from the 115 clone planted on the lower elevation sedimentary soil. Dramatic aromatics are the signature of the Astra each year that it is made. 16.7% whole cluster fermented and Barrel aged in all French cooperage. “
As you walk through the rolling vineyards of the 700 hectare Cramele Recas estate, two things are inescapable. The first is the scale of the transformation that Englishman Philip Cox and his wife Elvira have managed to achieve, replanting 700 hectares of decrepit vineyards and replacing them with immaculately tended sites the equal of anywhere else in the world. The second is that if you didn’t know where you were, you’d be convinced you were in Tuscany or any other “Classic” wine producing region. And, to a certain extent you are, Romania has a history of winemaking stretching back millennia and it was this potential that has driven this dynamic duo to dedicate their lives to driving forward Romanian winemaking to it’s current state of rude health. A 20 million euro investment in the vineyards and brand new winery, as well as recruiting seasoned new world winemakers, has enabled them to produce top quality reds and whites from a broad range of varietals at very competitive prices.
Aromas of dark berry fruits, spice, savoury tones and thyme. A sinewy palate full of bright fruit flavours with a delicate herbal thread throughout
Loads of raspberry and huckleberry fruit – an excellent IGT Pinot Noir.
A pale, mahogany coloured wine with bold, lively fruit aromas. Medium acidity, supple tannins and round structure all combine deliciously with floral flavours to create a suave wine.
A strongly perfumed style redolent of black cherries with hints of violets and even a touch of ginger spice. Soft and full of flavour this wine is showing upfront flavours of cherry supported by some savoury elements. The finish combines fine tannins and firm acidity but the overall impression is of soft lingering flavours making this a very easy drinking style.
