Verdicchio is one of the more under-rated grape varieties in Italy. It is a very old variety with records going back to the late Middle Ages and probably originated in the Veneto where it is known as Trebbiano di Soave. A variety with good levels of acidity means that it can often age well. Terre di Sampaolo is a wine made from grapes harvested slightly later than usual so they are at their optimum ripeness.
Top flight Verdicchio really sings and is one of Italy’s hidden treasures. Tucked away in the hills of its native Marches region just inland from the Adriatic coast, only now is this variety beginning to show how good it can be when made by a serious producer. Turbo charged Verdicchio. Incredible structure and length on the palate. Clean, well defined nose with a mouth filling flavour.
