Tyrrell’s VAT 47 Chardonnay is made from only three of Tyrrell’s own vineyards; the HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery), the New Vine Cuttings and the Short Flat vineyards. The oldest vines were planted in 1908. This 2019 has a wonderful core of sweet Chardonnay fruit with subtle underlying oak giving the wine lift and structure with a clean, fresh acid finish. Tyrrell’s VAT 47 Chardonnay 2019 is yet another stunning release and one of the very best wines to come from Australia!

“13% alcohol. From vines planted in 1968 on sandy loam soils, with Penfolds clone. It starts fermentation in stainless steel then goes to barrel (20% new). This is a style itching to be rich, but with some restraint, showing ripe pear and peach fruit with some bright citrus notes, and some toasty depth from the oak. It’s sophisticated and shows great balance: you’d expect a Hunter Chardonnay to be richer, but in this modern era, the grapes are picked earlier to preserve acidity and freshness. This will develop well in bottle.” – 93 Pts, Jamie Goode, TheWineAnorak.com (Tasted May 2022)

“Bright, light to mid-yellow colour with a rich, buttery, toasty bouquet, with smoky oak and roasted hazelnuts galore. The wine is full-bodied and rich, generous, almost opulent. A bigger style of Vat 47 than the recent trend, but it avoids fatness or tropical characters. A real mouthful of classic chardonnay.” – 96 Pts, The Real Review
