Encounters with unblended Mourvèdre are rare. The origins are almost certainly Spanish where it is called Monastrell, the principal black grape of the five appellations in Spain’s southeast, and a component of the great wines from the Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Plenty of richness, ripe and lifted – plum and pomegranate flavours charm whilst serious moody tannins create edgy impact.
