Moulin-à-Vent Clos des Thorins Château des Jacques 2018 | Magnum

Beaujolais, France, 150cl

"One of the most charming of these lieu-dit bottlings—though it's holding back plenty in reserve—is the 2018 Moulin-à-Vent Clos des Thorins, a dramatic and expressive wine that delivers aromas of plums, crushed cassis, violets and cracked pepper. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, its generous core of lively fruit is built around a muscular chassis of powdery tannin.

Is the 2018 vintage the finest produced to date at the Château des Jacques under Jadot's management? Certainly, that was the question I pondered as I tasted through these new releases, and Cyril Chirouze and his team deserve the warmest praise for what they have accomplished. When Jadot acquired this historic and extensive property in 1996, winemaking was reimagined with a Burgundian accent, introducing destemming, long macerations, new oak and extended élevage. To my palate, the wines' oak component was sometimes too prominent, even with bottle age; and that's why these 2018s stand out: they are simply the most seamlessly integrated wines I have tasted from the Château des Jacques between 1996 and the present. Deep, concentrated and elegantly muscular—after all, 2018 was a warm year—these are serious wines, built for the cellar, and I'm very optimistic indeed about their future. All the wines reviewed here come warmly recommended." 94 points. William Kelley robertparker.com
