Morgon Cuvée Corcelette Jean Foillard 2021

Beaujolais, France, 75cl

From 80-year-old vines in the lieu-dit of the same name, this wine has a vibrant fruit character with wild raspberry and cherry flavours and a subtle touch of spice. Amongst the most elegant expressions of Gamay you can find anywhere. Yep, nearly £40 for a Beaujolais but if purity is what you're after then it's worth EVERY penny.Jean and Agnès Foillard took over his father's domaine in 1980, and it wasn't long before their wines reached the cult-like status they enjoy today. Early on, Jean began to follow the teachings of Jules Chauvet, a traditionalist who defied everything that the more commercial brands were touting in the region. Jean and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, soon joined in on the movement. This Gang of Four, as christened by famous American importer Kermit Lynch, called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. With access to the very best vineyards in one of the most renowned areas of Morgon, the 'Côtes du Py', and 60-year-old vines, Jean's wines have a wonderful purity and freshness. This is a true and natural expression of Morgon.

"The 2021 Morgon Cuvée Corcelette comes from vines averaging 50-years in age, this vineyard suffering less reduction in volume than others due to the sandy soils. It is aged in used barrels for around 9 months. It has a quite compelling and complex bouquet, with raspberry and wild strawberry, rose petal and light chalky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, finely chiseled and lending tension. The acidity keeps this taut, focused, and quite minerally towards the leaner-than-usual finish. There's moderate length with fine salinity. Bon vin. Drink 2024-2036." - Neal Martin, Vinous.com (March 2023)
