We get sent so many bottles of ‘mature’ Bordeaux during August and September every year. The idea being to ship them as special parcels for our winter Grapevine. Unfortunately ‘mature’ is often interchangeable with ‘tired’ or ‘way past its best’. Thankfully, in amongst this year’s misses was this Haut-Bergey from 2002. We checked the label a couple of times to make sure it was correct as this was throwing enticing notes of blackberry, leather, cigar box and a touch of spice at us! Terrific value and in its perfect drinking window. Interestingly, the owner, Mme. Garcin-Cathiard, completed a massive renovation at the Château and its facilities in 2001 which certainly reaped rewards judging by this bottle.
